Summary A one-volume collection of 32 papers presented during the October 1998 symposium on the characterization of the acid-based properties of materials, new developments in acid-base interactions, and their applications. The contributors address the characterization of acid- base properties by XPS, inverse gas chromatography, immersion calorimetry, contact angle titration, and thin layer wicking. The relevance of acid-base interactions to bioadhesion, microbial adhesion, polymer adhesion, and adhesion in reinforced polymer composites is also described. Other topics include surface free energy acid-base theory applied to solid surfaces, calculation of core-electron binding energies with density functional theory, and the acid-base behavior of inorganic oxide surfaces. No index. Distributed by Brill. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR.
