Summary Electronic reproduction of the records of the Phelps-Stokes Fund, held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The papers contain: administrative records including trustee and committee minutes, correspondence, memoranda, financial records, legal documents, speeches, reports, occasional papers; and printed material such as pamphlets, brochures, clippings, articles, press releases and programs. The records concern the early work of the Fund in researching and supporting education for Africans and African Americans and improvement in housing conditions, through study commissions, reports and project grants. They document the Fund's engagement in contemporary debates concerning the philosophy and policies of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. The papers include material by or about the following people: Caroline Phelps Stokes, Olivia E.P. Stokes, Jackson Davis, Channing Tobias.
