Summary The purpose of this programme is to present the rationale and techniques for scaling, root planing and gingival curettage as therapeutic modalities in the management of periodontal disease. At the end of the two parts of the programme the viewer should be able to describe the histopathologic changes which occur in diseased gingiva following root planing and gingival curettage, list the appropriate instruments and describe their specific usage, and demonstrate clinical application of the principles of this therapy.
