Bibliography Includes bibliographical references.
Notes The monumental editio princeps of Leonardo's “Trattato,” and one of the grandest books in the literature of art, published through the joint efforts of Cardinal Francesco Barberini, the collector and antiquarian Cassiano dal Pozzo, the writer and theoretician Roland Fréart de Chambray, who published it, Raphael Trichet du Fresne, who edited the text, and the painter, architect and academician Charles Errard, who furnished the illustrations; the work is dedicated to Christina of Sweden. Errard's illustrations are adaptations of drawings by Poussin (or conceivably a student of Poussin's), which had been informally sketched in a manuscript of Leonardo's treatise belonging to Pozzo, then in the Barberini library. The complex history of the publication and the manuscript transcriptions on which it is based is given by Käte Trauman Steinitz in her study and bibliography of 1958. Poussin's well-known dissatisfaction with Errard's adaptations of his illustrations is recorded in a letter to Abraham Bosse. One remarkable feature of this edition is a rather casually inserted list of thirty-five books on art, (i3r-i4v) Steinitz has stated “represents one of the earliest, if not the earliest [exercises] in art bibliography.” A French edition, translated by Fréart, was published simultaneously with this Italian edition. A few expert mends, corners of a few leaves almost indetectibly renewed; old mend to clean tear on front flyleaf.
