Summary With its complex maze of fjords, islands and channels, Aisen, in Patagonia is a beautiful but inhospitable area. It was opened up to settlement in the 1980s with the construction of the Southern Highway. Together with plots of land allocated to would-be settlers from all over Chile, the highway was part of a colonisation policy aimed at improving the country's access to the sea and its resources, as well as asserting its sovereignty in border disputes with neighbouring Argentina. (From France, in French and Spanish, English subtitles) (Documentary Series) G CC WS.
