On the first January instant I was in company with District Constable [Brown?] [known?] in Launceston and at about twelve [...] at night to Oliver Adam's house in Launceston. I found there a prisoner named John Griffiths in the room adjoining the tap room. There was as woman their [that is: there] also. The woman charged the man Griffiths [...] with having robbed her of two dollars, the man was taken to the watch-house. Oliver Adams was on the premises Griffiths was taken to[her?] I saw nothing on the table. Griffiths was sitting down. Oliver Adams keeps a public house. Griffiths did not produce any pass. I do not know that Adams received Griffiths. I did not clear the room before Griffiths was charged. It was the left-hand room joining into the houses. [signed] Thomas Caines. Alfred William Cookes sworn [...] Constable at Launceston on he first of January instant.
