Summary This project, Mapping of Rural Industries Service Providers, was undertaken by Roberts Research and Evaluation Pty Ltd and supported by the University of Melbournẻs Institute of Land and Food Resources. Its terms of reference were as follows: Provide a report on the size and composition of service providers (people providing information, extension, education and training services) to land managers. ; Undertake a needs analysis in terms of professional development for service providers. ; Recommend appropriate activities in which the CVCB or its members might invest to meet the needs of service providers. The main activity of the project was a survey of service providers to ascertain their needs. To help develop the questionnaire and the scope of the study generally, a review of the literature on service provision in Australia was completed. The aim of these activities was to find out: who the service providers actually are ; what their skills and competencies are ; the professional environment in which they operate ; the measures by which they evaluate and improve their performance ; the expectations of farmers and employers ; the organisational structure supporting rural extension/education providers and the impact of this structure on the provision of their services. This project follows on from work by Fulton et al. (2003), Agricultural Extension, Learning and Change, which identified gaps in knowledge relating to a detailed analysis of the composition, needs, professional environment, and performance measurement of the rural service provider sector, as well as more specific expectations of clients and employers.
