Summary ANXIOUS HARVEST The Federal Government's set-up a new independent expert scientific committee to examine the coal seam gas industry, as fresh battle lines are being drawn between farmers and gas companies. At issue is the potential impact the controversial projects may have on water quality in some of the country's most productive farmland. It's a state election issue on Queensland's Darling Downs and now it's overshadowing this year's grape harvest in the Hunter Valley. COMMODITIES REPORT Landline's specialist weekly commodities analysis. DOWNSTREAM BENEFITS First it was Queensland's south-west now floodwaters are surging across vast tracts of north-western New South Wales. Major towns have been cut off, while smaller rural communities and properties face weeks of isolation ahead of a massive clean-up and repairs to roads and fences. However in most cases, the floodwaters are an inconvenience people are well prepared for and which will give their farming operations a huge boost over the next year or so. RECOVERY MISSION A year after Cyclone Yasi the work of recovery and reconstruction is well underway. The country's major banana growing region was all but wiped out sending the price of Australia's favourite fruit soaring. With the replanting now all but completed and banana supplies returning to normal, growers are examining ways to ensure such complete destruction of the industry won't happen again.
