Summary For the suppressed population of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi is 'a golden bird in a cage', an icon of freedom and democracy. In the West, she stands out as a symbol of peace and reconciliation, and has been awarded countless prizes for her efforts, among them the Nobel Peace Prize. This documentary tries to find out about the person and woman behind it all. It interviews her close family, friends and colleagues who talk about a daughter, a wife, a friend, a mother and a rebel, who early in life experienced deep grief and deprivation. The Military Dictatorship has on several occasions offered her the opportunity to leave the country. The program also looks at why Aung San Suu Kyi voluntarily choose to stay in her captivity instead of going into exile.
