Summary This series tells the story of how an insignificant German dialect evolved into the English language which is now spoken and understood by more people in the world than any other. A story of how a guttural tribal dialect, spoken by a few thousand people on part of an island once called the uttermost edge of the world, has adapted and changed in the face of both radical upheavals and slow developments through history. Travelling through Britain, this series delves down to the roots of the English language to Dark Age Ango-Saxon times, Danish invaders, medieval French and Renaissance Latin; four of the main, but not all, contributors to modern English.
