Notes ESP-Disk is a New York-based jazz and rock label, begun in 1966. From the beginning it tried to ensure that the artistic freedom of the musicians was unimpeded by record company interference or commercial expectations. The label became a key exponent of ‘free jazz’ and also boasts recordings by underground rock artists such as The Fugs, The Godz and Pearls Before Swine. Although the label was driven out of business in 1968, much of the catalogue was licensed by ZYX and in 2005 ESP resumed manufacturing, making many of its recordings available digitally.
