Notes Sun Records, with its catchphrase "where rock ‘n’ roll was born!", was begun in Memphis in 1952 by Sam Philips. It took advantage of the diverse musical scene in Memphis (gospel, blues, hillbilly, country, boogie and western swing) and, in one form or another, recorded them all. In 1954 Sam found Elvis Presley and hot on his heels followed a host of other names (Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison…). Rockabilly - lyrically bold and musically sparse, but vibrant - was the major evolution in the sound of Sun Records.
