Summary At the core of this slightly melancholy comedy is a free form chronicle of the ceremonies attending a family funeral following the death of the actor-narrator's father-in-law. Everything is presented in relation to ritual often laced with mild farce. Itami has commented that funerals are the now little understood rituals whereby old Japan connects with modern Japan. He also seems to be invoking the traditional Japanese film genre shomin-geki (home drama) - favoured by Ozu's favourite actor Chisu Ryu, who plays an elderly priest.
