Summary The uprising on January 1st 1994, by the Indios in Chiapas, one of the poorest regions of Mexico, was not unimaginable. The Indios wanted to draw attention to their violent oppression and unabated exploitation by occupying 5 towns and nearly 500 farms. Nearly 3 years later, Nettie Wild spent eight months investigating the fragile peace and difficult conditions of life there. Wild interviewed Marcos, the Zapatistas' intellectual leader and Bishop Samuel Ruiz Garcia, a supporter of human rights for the Indios. Wild also interviewed large landowners whose terror organization "Peace and Justice" wages a violent campaign against the desparate struggles of the Zapatistas.
