Summary This book details the process of urban planning in Singapore by tracing its early growth on the banks of the Singapore River to its present structure. It focuses on the redevelopment of the old city centre, whose metamorphosis is a microcosm of the overall transformation of the city-state. Through a historical and descriptive analysis of changes in economic activity and population, the resulting spatial aspects, and the role of the government, the book evaluates the forces that have shaped the Central Area. Of special interest is the extraordinary role played by the government as both planner and entrepreneur. A main thrust of the book is the idea that the urban morphology of today is largely the result of government planning, intervention, and entrepreneurship. The two land-use components which are increasingly dominant are shops and offices. Particular emphasis is given therefore to the changes in retailing and services activities.
