Summary This book discusses the restoration and conservation of musical instruments starting with an exceptional discovery: the first instrument that Bartolomeo Cristofori, who invented the piano, built for the Medici court in 1690. This spinetta ovale hade been considered lost for over three hundred years until it was found in the estate of Stafano Bardini in 1999. The book includes papers by restorers, collectors, and the curators and conservators of some of the most important museums of musical instruments in Europe and the United States, offering a broad overview of the various approaches to the restoration and conservation of musical instruments in general, as well as matters of standards, ethics and historical practice.
