The film is based on a 1951 novel by Liselotte welskopf-Henrich (1901-1979), an author who specialized in subjects of antiquity. As director, DEFA employed a Czech, Josef Mach, since East German directors did not dare enter a foreign territory. Within a short time the film reached millions of viewers. Most striking was the main character actor, Gojko Mitic, a Yugoslav sports teacher. With high professionalism, he plays a fearless chief Tokei-ihto, whose Dakota tribe is being driven from the land of their ancestors in the interest of gold.
