Summary Italian prisoners of war were sent to Australia during World War II, many sent to work on the land. Both the farmers and PoWs were apprehensive at first, but soon, ignorance and prejudice gave way to acceptance, with about twenty percent of the PoWs returning to Australia after the war as migrants often sponsored by the families they worked with.
