Notes Petition from Jewish citizens to President Buchanan requesting diplomatic intervention to restore Edgardo Mortara, a six year old Jewish boy in Bologna, to his parents. The boy, whose Catholic nurse had administered an emergency baptism to him, was abducted by the Papal police on 23 June 1858 and taken to Rome to be held and educated at a Catholic institution.
