Summary Survivor, the reality television series, is a U.S. adaptation of the successful Swedish programme, Expedition: Robinson. As claimed, the 'Survivor' series offers participants a social experience, and it is a test of both survival and social skills. Survivor: Cook Islands is the thirteenth season in the series. Here, the contestants are divided into four tribes by ethnicity: African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian. This grouping along racial lines, for the first time, causes some controversy, as previously, tribes have been divided by gender and age. The respective tribes are: Manihiki ("Hiki"), Puka Puka ("Puka"), Aitutaki ("Aitu") and Rarotonga ("Raro"). In episode 3, the four tribes evenly divide into two new mixed tribes, Aitutaki and Rarotonga. Then half-way through the game, they merge into a single tribe, called Aitutonga.
The game centres around a group of people who have been marooned on a desert island, and are left to fend for themselves by building their own shelter and finding their own food. Every few days, they compete in challenges for rewards and, more importantly, immunity from leaving the game. The team who loses the Immunity Challenge is forced to go to tribal council where the tribe has to vote one of its members off the island. During the midpoint of the game, which lasts 39 days, the two tribes merge into one. The final nine members of that single tribe form a jury of seven, who votes the winner from out of the remaining two tribe members.
The filming location is on the atoll of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, Pacific Ocean. Two of the four tribal camps are on Motu Rakau and Motu Rapota. Tribal Council is filmed near Vainamu, Arutanga on the main island of Aitutaki. Motukitiu is the location of Exile Island and Motu Maina is the overnight reward location. Challenges are filmed on Motu Akiami, which also hosts the eliminated contestants, known colloquially to some as the 'Mutiny Motel'. The show premiered on September 14, 2006. The two-hour season finale was aired on December 17, 2006, followed by the Reunion show, live from CBS Television City, Los Angeles.
