Summary Part one, The Marshall Islands, tells the story of the tiny atoll island of Bikini. In 1946, the people were removed from their homeland by the U.S. navy to make way for the American testing of nuclear bombs in the Pacific. They now live on another island, dependent on American food and support. They can never return to Bikini Atoll because it is poisoned beyond the possibility of habitation. This is a touching, impressive study of a people whose culture has been vanquished. Includes selected film and archival footage; and interviews with some prominent figures for comments and their stories.
Part two, A Place of Power in French Polynesia, is about Tahiti, a rugged, forest clad island, surrounded by coral reefs in the South Pacific. It is part of French Polynesia. The traditional Polynesian way of life has been swamped over the years by foreign influences. This documentary examines the present re-emergence of the traditional culture. Looks at some of the people responsible for the cultural revival and their arts, including the building of a double-hulled canoe, the art of full body tattooing and the fierce dance competitions at the high point of celebration of Polynesian culture, the Tiurai Festival. Includes selected film and archival footage; and interviews with some prominent figures for comments and their stories.
