Summary Like Kildea's Celso and Cora, this is a film about everyday life in a southern Philippine village but unlike the earlier film it places the lives of its subjects in a political context - the election campaign for the presidency between Imelda and Ferdinand Marcos and Cory Aquino. Edited from more than 200 hours of footage shot on 16 mm. and video 8 filmed in direct cinema, Valencia Diary takes a discursive approach to chronicling the way individual lives are embedded in wider historical forces and events - the tension between governance and rebellion. For a decade the village has been a battleground for the New Peoples' Army and the Marcos military. The central 'characters' are Rogel and Aida Gonzales, struggling to coax a living from a rented rice plot, and Father Rino the parish priest who preaches against political and military abuses of power.
Language notes Tagalog and Spanish dialogue, English subtitles.
