Summary The Archive Project documents the story of the Realist Film Unit, covering the period, late 1940s and early 1950s. It is the story of a small group of pioneers, who dedicated themselves to giving Australian audiences access to the images and ideas of world cinema, beyond British and U.S. commercial film distributions. These early film makers, of the Melbourne Realist film movement, began making films from around 1945. Some of their films were lost, while others exist only in fragments. Their work was the base from which film festivals in Melbourne and Sydney emerged. Their contribution to film culture did not meet with favour with governments of the day, as these Melbourne Realists were 'activist' film makers, who supported the labour movement, housing and peace campaigns. The Archive Project interweaves information from a wide range of archival sources and formats. It is presented as a commentary on the challenges faced by an independent voice in dark times. Amongst the prominent film making pioneers featured are Keith Gow and Bob Matthews.
