Summary In this programme, an expert panel examines the issues of whether children and young women are being sexualised, from an ever increasingly younger age, through advertisements, the media and popular culture. Refers to the American Psychological Association's (February 2007) report on the effects on young women, from long-term exposure to sexualised ads. It appears that the proliferation of sexualised images of girls are teaching them that they have to be sexually desirable. This has led to eating disorders, poor body image, depression and anxiety. In Australia, more parents and child psychologists are expressing similar concerns. Scrutinises whether kids are becoming sexually active much younger as a result of the images they see on advertisements, or if it is just a reflection of social change. Popular culture is being blamed for these developments, but it seems that the issue might be more complex and worth investigating, to find a solution.
The panel members include, Louise Newman, Melinda Tankard Reist, Catharine Lumby, Alan McKee. Includes also a studio audience, who participate with comments.
