Summary This mini-series began as a dramatisation of the recurring 'new chum' theme in Australian cinema. The series begins in the late thirties with the arrival of a young Englishman in the Queensland sugar cane town of Silkwood. He is not readily accepted by the Australian cane cutters and is adopted by the Italians. He has love affairs, survives the war and makes a successful return to the canefields. The television ratings in Australia and Britain encouraged the production of a sequel 4 episode mini-series and a 24 episode series which took the story up to the early fifties.
