Summary Tobi Kahn explores dreams, memories, and myth in his paintings, which achieve a luminous character through the subtle variations of many layers of paint and wash. Over the years he has carved originally conceived furniture; he has crafted Jewish ceremonial objects -- menorahs, carvings on Torah arks, candlesticks and chalices; and he has created small shrines. His ritualistic objects enshrine single bronze humanoid figures that resemble the small terra-cotta models of Greco-Roman temples, as well as reliquaries of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Among Kahn's major works in three dimensions are also stage designs. There are no specific referents in Kahn's work. His paintings and sculptures, executed with consummate craftsmanship, are animated by a yearning for the transcendent.
