Summary Based on two surveys of Hungarian companies conducted in 1995 and 1999, this work analyzes the competitive behavior of firms in the microsphere. The authors (all of the Budapest U. of Economic Sciences and Public Administration, Hungary) present their conceptual framework for studying globalization and firm competitiveness and offer a broad statistical description of the surveys. Issues of governance, strategic management, and management are analyzed. Finally the performance of business enterprises and their fields of operation are explored.
