Summary Footage of the Soviet 'blitz' at the heart of the Third Reich, which began in January, 1945. Berlin, their ultimate goal, was just 200 kilometres away. The Russian front successfully pushed on to the border of the Reich. Soon, they were on the Oder front, where they built up a gigantic force. Cities in the Red Army's path fell, such as Köslin, Breslau and Kolberg, which were completely destroyed. Includes selected archival footage of the scramble of refugees to evacuate from Kolberg, before it surrendered on 18th March 1945.
Soviet soldiers had learnt from the Germans, and were doing exactly what the Germans did in 1941. It was the time for revenge and reprisals. Now German cities were burning and innocent German civilians were suffering, just as innocent Russians once suffered. 'The Russians are coming!' became a cry of terror on the Eastern Front. German propaganda still promised victory; and that the Führer would get them out. Hitler still insisted that they could never surrender voluntarily. Goebbels masterminded Nazi propaganda to raise false hopes and play on the fears of the people.
Recreation of the battle scenes, and newsreel coverage of the last days of Kolberg. Includes aerial maps showing the German Oder front, and Red Army advance. Interweaves personal narratives of participants of the war, experiences of civilians caught up in it with selected footage from the newsreels and national archives. With 60 years of peace, survivors now lead normal lives; and they were able to forgive and forget, with time.
