Summary |
A contemporary Australian artist's book taking the shape of a codex with a series of vivid and dramatic paintings interwoven with thoughts of an artist's doubts and dreams. "Theo approaches the book as a painter, rather than a printmaker or writer. The paint lies heavy on its pages, making the physical gesture of page-turning an essential element in reading. Each opening has been approached as a painted dyptich, the pages forming a sequential suite of paintings between boards, and intentended to be read as such. The overall mood is dreamy, a sombre meditation on isolation and yearning. Fragments of painted text float, Colin McMahon-like, across its pages, wispy as clouds. Other pages explore darker tones, paint is stripped away to reveal the blank whiteness of the paper beneath, pages are torn, violent incisions made, paint is dripped. There is dream and there is confusion, and what we know with certainty resides elsewhere."-From the catalogue essay by Des Cowley. |
