Summary This monumental work places at the disposal of the English reading public a solid introduction to early Christian literature. It is the first work of its kind written originally in English.
Reviewers were unanimous in heaping praise upon the publication and looking upon it as a breakthrough in studying the Fathers of the Church. "For the student of early Church history as well as the development of Christian doctrine, Quasten's work is an outstanding contribution.
Indeed one may confidently predict that it will be the standard work in the field for many years to come" (The Princeton Seminary Bulletin).
This achievement was completed with the publication of Patrology Volume IV. Because of health difficulties Johannes Quasten was unable to finish his masterwork. Fortunately, the Augustinian Patristic Institute of Rome decided to complete the Patrology; its work is translated in the present volume. "This is a superb piece of work (and most competently translated) that is an absolute necessity for even the smallest theological collection" (Adris Newsletter, Fordham University).
